Essentials of TESOL: TESOL as Service (Micro-credential)

Aim: The purpose of this micro-credential is to provide a basic knowledge of the field of TESOL and supervised practice in applying that knowledge through teaching in a community-based classroom situation.
Outcome: On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will be able to use your theoretical knowledge of current ESOL teaching and assessment methodology, practical skills of lesson and classroom management, and knowledge of online resources for teaching specific groups and programmes, to teach ESOL in a culturally responsive manner both in New Zealand and internationally.
Length: This is an intensive four-week course at Level 5 (12 credits). Successful applicants will be required to complete pre-course assignments which include readings and observation reports of two different ESOL classes taught by qualified and experienced ESOL teachers.
Assessments:
1. Practicum assessment: 2 x 45-minute teaching sessions with ESOL students. (70%)
2. Pre-course written assignments (2), based on reading of a course textbook. (20%)
3. Oral class presentation, with a written copy for the assessor, evaluating resources on two websites for teaching and professional development. (10%)
Trainers: A team of qualified instructors with extensive cross-cultural experience specialising in teaching and training teachers to effectively teach ESOL.
Costs:
Course Fees - NZ$1,850.00
Accommodation (subject to availability) - NZ$180.00 per week
Admission:
Teaching experience is helpful but not necessary
Commitment to service
For those whose first language is English, applicants need to have either:
i. Completed any course at level 5 or equivalent on the NZQCF
ii. Or: Passed NCEA Level 3 or equivalent in English.
For those whose first language is not English, there are three entry pathways:
i. - If your secondary-level education was completed in an English-speaking school, you can be admitted under the same requirements as those for whom English is their first language, as outlined above
ii. - Or: If you have completed a minimum of a two-year diploma at level 6 on the NZQCF or equivalent in an English-speaking/teaching tertiary institution
iii. - Or: If you have achieved an IELTS score of 7 overall.

Closing date: Friday, 26 September, 2025 - Limited to 6 participants for focused group learning.
Acceptance: You will be notified of the outcome of your registration by Friday, 3 October. If accepted, you will receive an enrolment form, payment instructions and detailed course information through email. A non-refundable payment of 50% of the course fees is required within one month of your acceptance notification.
Accommodation
Fees: $30 per night or $180 per week
Accommodation is limited and on a first come first serve basis. The accommodation fee is $30 per person/night in addition to the course fees. Evening dinner is available Monday to Thursday only, during term time at a cost of $11 per meal. Please register early to avoid any disappointment.
