There is a wealth of experience within the wider missions community and it is our desire to bring high quality input from experienced trainers. Below you will see the courses planned for 2010. These can change from year to year as we continue to seek input which offers excellence and practical application.

Romans
Trainer: Peter Given, Eastwest College
(Level 6, 5 credits)
An in depth study of Paul’s letter to the Romans, including a structural and contextual overview, an exegetical treatment of chosen passages, and study of major theological themes and emphases in this New Testament epistle.

Sharpening Your Interpersonal Skills
Facilitators: Gwen Flaming, Sam Abalo & Lyn Woodford
This course is not NZQA accredited and is run in conjunction with International Training Partners
This workshop is designed to enhance the knowledge, attitudes and skills of
Christian workers in how they relate to family, co-workers, friends and those
from other cultures. Participants work and share together in pairs, small groups
and in the whole group. They observe the skills and then practice them with
each other. The best principles of adult learning are facilitated so that maximum
learning and skill building take place. You must participate in all of the
sessions in order to complete the requirements for this course. To register,

Community Development
Trainer: Mick Duncan, Alongsiders
(Level 5, 5 credits)
This is an introductory course on how to work with existing communities, be they geographical (suburbs), neighbourhoods (streets) or localities (highrise flats, etc.). The focus is on groups of people and their places, rather than on individuals, and how these can work together so as to make their places better for people to live in. The course will also look at the unique contribution of the Christian faith to this process.

Serving in Teams
Trainer: Dr. Mike Barnett, Columbia International University
(Level 5, 9 credits)
You will learn team dynamics, particularly the underlying principles of putting together and nurturing groups of people to accomplish ministry. Various aspects of team development will be studied including the cycle of team development, dealing with team conflict, and leading a team. You will gain familiarity with group theory literature as part of the course. Most study assignments will be completed as a team.

Pastoral Care
Trainer: Dr Roy King, Columbia International University
(Level 5, 9 credits)
This class explores the theology of pastoral ministry and the basis of the pastoral role. An introduction to pastoral care is given together with a consideration of differing models of pastoral support. Students also study the pastoral care of cross-cultural workers. This course will be successful if each student wrestles with Biblical truth related to being a healthy leader and sustaining that health over a lifetime of ministry. The teacher’s desire is to see each student committed to being a healthy leader and actively multiplying healthy leaders who are vital partners in God’s global work of making disciples of all people.

Tools for Language Learning
Trainers: Wycliffe Bible Translators Team with Lyn Woodford, Eastwest College
(Level 6, 15 credits)
Learn how to plan a language-learning programme and to use techniques and principles which enable you to become a self directed language learner. You will also study phonetics, learn to recognise and produce the most common speech sounds of the world, and thus be equipped to accurately distinguish and pronounce sounds in other languages. If you plan to serve in a cross-cultural situation where you need to learn another language, this course is a must. It will involve classroom teaching time along with practice in using language-learning techniques with a speaker of another language.

Additional Requirements: Each student needs their own computer and a digital recording device.
Linguistic Analysis for Language Learning
Trainer: Phil Smith, Eastwest College
(Level 6, 5 credits)
This optional add-on to Tools for Language Learning is an introduction to the nature of languages and their structures. The focus will be on training learners to analyze and identify components of language as an aid to their language learning.
Dates: Thurs afternoons between 12th August and 16th September 2010

Christian Social Work
Trainers: Mick & Ruby Duncan, Alongsiders
(Level 6, 5 credits)
This course is an exploration of the theological framework for Christian social work and development of some introductory practical skills to engage with people to help them change with God’s help.
Dates: 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th August 2010

Children in Crisis Module 1: Street Children
Trainers: Becky & Graham Bee, WEC, Australia
(Level 5, 5 credits)
This foundational course provides an understanding of the impact that trauma-produced losses play in the life of a child. It also examines various effective intervention principles that promote healing and facilitate closure to a child’s traumatic experiences. Emphasis is placed on holistic ministry.

Accommodation & Registration
Accommodation is limited on a first come first serve basis. Accommodation fee is $120 per person/week in addition to the course fees. This includes evening tea Monday to Thursday only during the seminar period. Please register early to avoid any disappointment.
